Often times, people ask where they can get simple answers for many questions about the cattle dog. The links above are a wealth of knowledge and are definately worth going to, reading thoroughly, and considering (or re-considering) just why it is that you wish to get an AKC Australian Cattle Dog.
Many of us love the breed and couldn't live without them, but that is not to say that the cattledog is good for YOU and your family! Quite the contrary, the ACD is not reccomended for the beginning dog owner, and often times is a hard challenge for even skilled owners and trainers.
Think long and hard before purchasing an ACD. Ask questions of anyone who is well-versed in the breed for their thoughts. Ppuppies are wonderful but typically people like us who do rescue see many ACD's up for adoption or needing rescue between the ages of 8 months to 2 years old - and most often it is because that cute puppy has grown into a controlling monster that herds with it's teeth the family on a day to day basis.
Early and CONSISTANT training is required to raise a good ACD, and we're not talking about once a day walks on a leash. This is one of the most intelligent and loyal breeds out there, but they require 2 solid years of daily active training not only IN your home but OUT in public and in classes with other dogs.
We just can't say it enough, this is a breed for a devoted owner, but it is definately not a breed for everyone, so don't feel bad if you thought you wanted one but after reading much information, you're not so sure you want to do that anymore. Feel free to contact many breeders who can be found on the links above and be honest with them. It will be better for you, your family, and your future dog if you make the right choices from the beginning!
